They say it because it’s true: Breaking up is hard to do.

Adding to the misery of constantly thinking about how your guy or gal has left you for someone who is — to them — a better option, New Year’s Eve is all about coupledom and romance, with a ball drop to initiate kisses and snuggles through at least a few minutes of Auld Lang Syne.

Some advice: Stay away from your coupled-up friends, turn off the television and turn up your MP3 player. Here’s a playlist that will remind you the ex was never all that, but you are!

So What (Pink)
This song forces a brand new attitude, and you’re gonna wear it tonight. If you're going out, turn up the volume while getting ready, and don’t plan to make your ex jealous — plan to forget him or her altogether.

Wide Awake (Katy Perry)
We all look back at past relationships and wonder what we could have done differently, or as Katy Perry says, why we “read the stars wrong.” She tells it like it is … crashing from the high sucks.

Butterfly (Mariah Carey)
Mimi says to let go of someone, and if they come back, it was meant to be. Until then, let them spread their wings. Their very ugly wings.

You'll Think of Me (Keith Urban)
We all hope for the same thing: That the person who left us eventually has a moment of remembering the good times with us. Keith Urban says it will be in that moment that we'll be just fine; you had your chance.

It's Too Late (Carole King)
So you tried. You worked on it. But you see the misery in your partner's eyes. There's no point in faking it 'til ya make it, Carole King says.

Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson)
Sometimes it's easier to breathe after the relationship, no? Maybe you're surprised by how much better you feel now that it's over. He or she had a chance, and blew it, according to Clarkson.

Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) (Kelly Clarkson)
Another tune from the American Idol winner that empowers the dumped to embrace survival, and remember that life goes on.

Burn (Usher)
It's better to let something go than to hold on and hurt, according to Usher. "The party ain't jumpin' like it used to."

Before He Cheats (Carrie Underwood)
So, Carrie did what all ladies want to do when a guy gets with another chick ... she grabbed a bat and went to town on his vehicle. You go, girl. Once a cheater, always a cheater, so don't apologize and take him back — ever.

I'm Moving On (Rascal Flatts)
Peace! At last! This one is sure to bring a few tears, but the message brings a little hope to the listener and proves you'll eventually reach a place of contentment and get over the person who left.
