PHOENIX-   Nala, German Shorthaired Pointer, was brought onto the ASU Police Department team back in April to fill in for retired K9, Tillman.

Nala is being trained to detect explosives and once she is done with her training she will be a “key asset to keeping people safe,” ASU Police Department said in a tweet

In the last few weeks, Nala has trained alongside Tempe Police Officer Razo. According to the department, this smart K9 has already learned many of the scents necessary to become a certified explosives detection dog.

In addition to Nala, the department is home to other K9s as well like Dutch, who is training to be the department’s first trauma K9. The department puts together, “Down Time with Dutch” in which they hangout at a location on the ASU Tempe campus and allow students to relax and let go of their stress with Dutch. Zeke is another K9 at the department. He helps with detecting odor around campus.
