GILBERT, AZ — The next adventure in our culinary quest to find the most decadent and over-the-top creations in the Valley takes us to downtown Gilbert where a small cafe is blending healthy smoothies into picturesque social media-worthy soft-serve desserts.

They're called "superfood bowls" and are one of the staples of Karma Apple Juicery's Instagram page and menu.

The smoothies are a mixture of dates, fruits, seeds and nuts. They can be turned into bowls and topped with fruit, house-made granola, cocoa nibs and coconut pieces. An upcharge does apply.

Watch the video in the player to see "The Mermaid" and "Arizona Sunrise" bowls.

Joanie Cady opened Karma Apple Juicery at her local farmers market to see if there was a business for healthy desserts. She started with organic caramel apples coated in coconut, nuts, and dark chocolate.

In March 2018, she opened her old store near Gilbert and Elliot roads, just south of Gilbert's Heritage District.

"It's awesome that people get o excited about a smoothie bowl," she told ABC15 earlier this year. "That makes our day."

Aside from juices and smoothies, she sells organic, vegan and gluten-free versions of popular sweets, such as Twix bars, brownies and edible cookie dough chunks.
