SCOTTSDALE, AZ — The American Girl store in Scottsdale -- its only location in Arizona -- has permanently closed.

The store opened in 2015 and was located at the Scottsdale Quarter shopping center, near Scottsdale Road and Greenway-Hayden Loop.

“It has been our privilege to serve this community for the past five years, and we thank our customers for their loyalty and look forward to continuing our valued relationship with them,” said general manager Jamie Cygielman in a statement.

“While decisions that impact our associates, our customers, and the community are always difficult, the closure is a necessary step to optimize our store portfolio and accelerate our expanding e-commerce business," the statement said.

The company said the closure impacts 26 employees, both full- and part-time workers. It is also helping with transition assistance for eligible employees, the company said.

American Girl has also closed stores in Georgia, Kansas City, and Colorado, according to local media reports.

Many companies have declared bankruptcy and closed stores amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them JCPenney, Chuck E Cheese, Nordstrom, Pier 1 Imports, Neiman Marcus, and Lord & Taylor.
