CHICAGO — A former Chicago police officer and World War II veteran will be laid to rest with the help of strangers in his community.
According to local Chicago station WGN9, John Hubbard passed away at the age of 91 last week.
He spent three decades on the police force and served in the military. Despite his long career of serving his community, WGN9 says his wife passed away in 2012 and he has few family and friends left.
A family friend who lived next door to the Hubbard family for nearly 50 years asked WGN9 if they could ask military or Chicago police veterans to be pallbearers at his memorial service.
Within minutes of the broadcast, multiple people stepped up to offer their time to bring Hubbard to his final resting place.
WGN9 says they now they have enough volunteers for the service, but other military and Chicago Police veterans are invited.
His service is set for Wednesday, May 22, at 11:45 a.m. at Restyle Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.
