A man opened fire on a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office substation in Surprise firing multiple rounds at a bullet-proof door, said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The man pulled into the substation parking lot near Dysart and Bell roads around 3:45 p.m. and started shooting.

None of the bullets hit the deputy who was behind a bullet-proof door, Arpaio said. No deputies were hurt, he said.

The man did surrender and was taken into custody.

Late Friday evening, MCSO identified the suspect as 38-year-old Jonathan David Perez.

Arpaio said there may be other weapons, and possibly dangerous materials, in the suspect's car. They will be investigating the vehicle and working to secure the area.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the man entered the substation. He did not.
