A lawyer for a 19-year-old Surprise man accused of intentionally causing a four-vehicle fatal wreck in an alleged attempt to take his own life says his client is remorseful.

Defense attorney David Black told a judge during Keith Johnson's initial court appearance that Johnson had expressed remorse and that words couldn't express how Johnson was feeling.

Police say Johnson said after the wreck that he'd been depressed and intentionally caused the collision in an alleged attempt to take his own life.

Johnson was arrested and jailed on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault after being released from a hospital Wednesday.

The woman who was killed was identified as 46-year-old Margie Yaw-Mehlos of Surprise.
