A Sun City woman was taken into custody after cutting her dog, leaving the animal with serious injuries.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials said Dawn Courson was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant.

As deputies investigated, they found she had attacked her 80-pound mixed breed dog's front legs with a knife, causing deep lacerations and leaving a significant amount of blood at the scene in Sun City. Officials said the 53-year-old told them she "wanted to die with her dog."

The animal was transported to the Palm Glen Animal Hospital for emergency care.

Courson, found to have an outstanding warrant for assault and disorderly conduct, confessed to the crime during an interview.

She has been booked on the outstanding warrant, and MCSO detectives are continuing to investigate in order to bring charges related to animal cruelty pending veterinary medical records.
