Police responded to St. Luke's Medical Center in Tempe early Sunday morning to investigate after a man was shot in Phoenix.

Both Phoenix and Tempe police departments had officers in the parking lot of the hospital near Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard since 2 a.m. on Sunday. Police tape was set up in parts of the parking lot.

The Phoenix Police Department said a shooting took place earlier in the morning near  48th Street and Broadway Road. Officials were told the victim and another person were in the area to pay an "outstanding debt." The man exited the vehicle while his passenger remained in the car; the passenger told officials they later saw the man being chased by two men. The man told the passenger he had been shot.

The passenger then drove the injured man to the hospital, which is where police met up with the pair.

The 42-year-old man was then taken to another hospital due to his severe condition, police said.

There is no "credible" suspect description, police said. The man remains in serious condition.
