Tempe police have made an arrest in an assault at a hotel early Sunday morning.

Tempe police say the women, who are both 19 years old and from out of town, left a bar on Mill Avenue early Sunday morning with 25-year-old Phillip Escobedo who invited them to the pool of the Mission Palms hotel, near the intersection of Mill Avenue and Fifth Street.

Police said they were first notified when a passerby reported a woman walking around looking disoriented. The woman was treated for her injuries and taken to the hospital, where Det. Duran said she remains in critical condition.

Three hours later, officers responded to the hotel pool after someone found a woman there. She was also injured, and has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Police believe Escobedo assaulted both women, for unknown reasons, and left the hotel.

He was identified and arrested Wednesday afternoon.

Escobedo is being charged with aggravated assault, assault and theft of a credit card.
