House Speaker David Gowan announced Thursday that he has suspended his campaign for Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Gowan also announced that he has endorsed Republican Gary Kiehne in the race.

"After prayer and conversations with my family, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Congress and to endorse my friend Gary Kiehne in the Republican primary for Congress," Gowan said in a statement. "I ran for Congress because I felt called to do my part to save the country that has given me so very much...This race is not about me, and we can’t save the country if we don’t win."

Gowan was one of many in a tight race to replace Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who is seeking her party's nomination for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican John McCain.
