Pedestrian hit, killed by car in Phoenix, driver stayed on scene

A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a suspected impaired driver near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Tuesday night.

Police received reports around 9 p.m. regarding an accident involving a man who was attempting to cross 83rd Avenue mid-block.

The pedestrian, later identified as 53-year-old David Curry Sr. was struck by a car driving southbound on 83rd Avenue, a police spokesman said. The driver, a 24-year-old man, stopped at the scene and waited for officers to arrive.

Curry Sr. died at the crash scene, officials confirmed. 

The driver is accused of impairment by prescription medication.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are reminding people to always use crosswalks and remain alert while crossing the roadways. Drivers are also urged to remain alert behind the wheel and avoid distractions.

According to Phoenix police, 41 pedestrians have been killed by a vehicle so far this year. In all of 2017, there were 56 pedestrians killed within the City of Phoenix.
