The Phoenix Police Department has identified the officer that shot and killed 24-year-old Francisco Valdez at a home on March 23.

Police say 33-year-old Shawn Magness, an eight year veteran with the department, shot Valdez as he attacked another officer with a knife.

Officers first responded to the home near 65th Avenue and Van Buren Street because of a call of a family fight.

Valdez’s mother said he was acting erratically and she wanted him removed from the home.

Officers then reportedly went inside to talk to Valdez, and during so Valdez ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife.

Police say Valdez, knife in hand, then charged at an officer who fell backwards over a couch. As Valdez approached the officer, who was now on the ground, Magness reportedly opened fire on the suspect.

The officer attacked during the incident has not been identified, but is 22-years-old and has less than one year of service with the department.

Family says they called Phoenix police for help, because Valdez was having mental issues. They are calling for an independent investigation into the shooting and say police didn't try to treat Valdez after he was shot even though he was still breathing.
