Arizona transportation officials say they are more than halfway done with a decade-long effort to upgrade rest areas around the state.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the Texas Canyon Rest Area, which is along Interstate 10 between Benson and Willcox, reopened Thursday after undergoing renovations for six months.

Texas Canyon is the ninth of 17 rest areas that have been improved since 2013.

Officials say an additional two rest areas will reopen later this year including one that has been closed since 2009.

According to ADOT, these rest areas have aging infrastructure in need of repair or replacement including water and wastewater systems.

ADOT is also checking to see that all rest areas can be used by disabled visitors.

Updates will continue around the state through 2020.
