12 arrested in Border Patrol drug bust

Several drug busts over the weekend resulted in the total seizure of 1,658 pounds of marijuana, worth $829,000, and the arrest of 12 illegal immigrants.

On Friday December 4 Border Patrol agents near Wellton, Arizona seized 469 pounds of marijuana, valued at an estimated $234,500, and arrested five illegal immigrants they found in the Desert.

The next day, Border Patrol agents near Yuma seized a vehicle when it tried to cross a shallow point in the Colorado River and got stuck. There was about $359,500 worth of marijuana in the vehicle. The six subjects ran back to Mexico, abandoning more than 700 pounds of marijuana.

That afternoon December 5, back in Wellton Marine pilots found another two abandoned bundles of marijuana, weighing 45 pounds and valued at $22,500.

On Sunday December 6, Border Patrol agents from Camp Grip, Yuma Sector’s forward operating base, seized an abandoned ATV and 247 pounds of marijuana. The drugs are valued at an estimated $123,500.

Also on Sunday, Wellton Station Border Patrol agents arrested seven illegal immigrants who were hauling 178 pounds of marijuana worth about $89,000.
