The gunman who opened fire at the Umpqua Community College in Oregon Thursday died by suicide, officials said today.

The news was released by Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, on behalf of the Oregon State Medical Examiner.

Ten people, including the gunman, died in the shooting spree.

An officer-involved shooting investigation is being conducted and is nearing a conclusion, according to the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.

When asked about the officer-involved shooting investigation, Hanlin said today there was an exchange of gunfire and the shooter was neutralized. He added that the officer-involved shooting investigation is being handled independently of the main investigation.
