What should you do if you’re armed and pulled over by an officer?

“Be a polite professional,” said Ken Campbell, COO of Gunsite Academy north of Prescott. Prior to becoming an executive at Gunsite, he spent 35 years in law enforcement – including eight as an Indiana Sheriff.

Arizona is now teaching drivers who are carrying a weapon how to handle being stopped by a police officer. They’re simple rules Campbell has been teaching his students for years:

  • Roll down the window and keep your hands on your steering wheel
  • If it’s dark, turn on your car’s interior light
  • Immediately let the officer know you have a weapon and where it is. DO NOT reach for it.
  • Follow officer’s instructions

Campbell says it really comes down to avoiding any surprises.
