Navajo Nation officer killed in head-on collision

Leander Frank, a Navajo Nation officer, was killed in a head-on collision that happened on Route 64 near milepost 15.5 on Tuesday.  

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Officer Frank was dispatched to Tsaile in Apache County for a call.

Officials with the Navajo Nation said as the patrol officer was responding, a vehicle was approaching him. Officials said both cars tried to avoid each other but collided head-on. The collision occurred between Chinle and Tsaile, AZ. 

Frank died instantly, according to officials; the passengers traveling in the other vehicle survived. 

Governor Doug Ducey has ordered all flags to fly at half staff on Wednesday in honor of the fallen officer. 

DPS is investigating the collision.
