We know you can check books out at the library, but now you can get more than your favorite read. What if you could find seeds for your favorite vegetable or flower?
Growing plants isn't anything new for Tonya Frazier but where she could get the seeds to make a garden was news to her — The Mesa Public Library. She actually checked the seeds out, just like a book.
"No, never heard of that before," Frazier said.
It's a program the library expanded this summer.
"We rotate the seeds that are available based on seasonality, so we try to have things that are ready to start as seeds now," said Cherise Mead with the library.
So just like you would a book, the public can check out up to three seed packets a month. The hope is that you'll then return seeds you harvest from the plants you grew.
The most popular seed to check-out: spinach. Everything is edible, even the flowers.
"Many herbs and other vegetables do well in pots, so you don't need a big garden plot to be able to grow," said Mead.
All of the seeds are suitable to grow in the Valley.
Since the program started, the library has checked out more than 3,000 packets of seeds. You are not fined though if you aren't able to bring seeds back.
