Arizona is implementing restrictions on campfires, outdoor smoking and other activities on state-owned and -managed land in in six counties in an effort to prevent human-caused wildfires.
The restrictions ordered by State Forester Jeffrey Whitney on Tuesday took effect Wednesday. That's the same day that four national forests in Arizona followed the lead of a fifth forest and implemented new campfire and smoking restrictions.
The state's restrictions apply to Apache, Coconino, Gila, Maricopa, Navajo, and Yavapai counties.
Under the state's restrictions, campfires and use of stoves burning wood, coal or charcoal are prohibited other than in developed campgrounds or picnic areas.
Also, smoking is prohibited unless within a vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or in an area that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials
