School of Rock is celebrating five years of being a leader in performance-based music education, and they want to celebrate with you by hosting a weekend of free music, free rock band classes and free food!
The festivities kick off on Saturday, Aug. 26 with open houses at all three Valley locations in Scottsdale, Gilbert and Ahwatukee. Guests can come tour the school, enjoy free rock band classes and see local talent play. Every hour on the hour, Sugar Skulls, performers from School of Rock who travel and perform across the Valley, will be performing. Every half hour, people can take the stage with instructors and put on their own rock show, learning about new instruments and about performing in general.
The Scottsdale location will also have a water slide, and Short Leash Hot Dogs will give away free hot dogs to the first 50 people, in addition to having an open mic.
On Sunday, Aug. 27, they will be hosting a free, all-ages concert at Wasted Grain in Scottsdale from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Over 20 artists will be performing, most being students who've gone through the programs or performed through Sugar Skulls. Several students who performed in Sugar Skulls have moved on and are in successful bands touring the nation. Instructors' local bands will be performing from around the Valley as well.
Through a unique performance-based approach, School of Rock students are guided from the lesson room to the stage, where they learn the music of many genres culminating in a live show.
