Officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Mesa.

The shooting happened in a residential area near 80th Street and University Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Mesa police say they were called to the home to serve an order of protection against 44-year-old Leon Wax.

Police say Lax was acting aggressive toward officers and was known to be aggressive toward police in the past over similar issues.

Police say when they served Wax with the order of protection he became aggressive and grabbed a large stick from a shed.

"Based on our past dealings with him he had always been seemingly unstable and aggressive in nature," Detective Steve Berry with Mesa Police said.

Police say the suspect was shot after wielding the object toward officers. Wax was taken to the hospital after being shot, and he is alive, but his condition is unknown.

"The officer showed up; they served him with those papers that would've provided him with custody of the house to his spouse," Berry said.

No other information is known at this time.
