Police have arrested a woman accused of a hit-and-run crash involving a young boy in Mesa.

Officials were called out to the scene near 56th Street and Broadway Road before 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Mesa police say the 7-year-old child was crossing the street when he was struck. The boy was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say Maria De Jesus Cabrera Davila left the scene after the crash but was returning to the scene when she was contacted. According to police, the woman said she was afraid after the crash and reached out to a family member who advised her to return to the accident scene.

A probable cause statement made public by police said Davila holds only a learner's permit.

Police aren't releasing the name of the victim and did not disclose the nature of his injuries but did say he is being treated at a Mesa hospital.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the accident and it's unknown if the suspect has a lawyer. Drivers using learning permits must have a licensed driver with them while driving.

She will be charged with failure to remain at the scene of a serious injury collision.
