Phoenix woman grieving mother's recent death targeted by burglars

It was a time when she was supposed to be grieving.

Phoenix resident Laurel Thompson's mother just passed away on Thursday. But thieves have made her feel a very different emotion: anger.

Two men were caught on her home surveillance camera taking the cash her late mother had given her to pay for her funeral.

This all happened late Friday night near 91st Avenue and Thomas Road.

"I can hear my mom saying, 'Excuse me? This is supposed to be about me,'" Thompson laughed through the heartache. "And that is exactly what my mom would say."

Thompson is trying to remember her mother's personality and that everything that was taken is just stuff. However, it was a lot of stuff that was taken — stuff that cannot be replaced.

Priceless heirlooms and jewelry her mother had given her were taken. Then, more than $4,000 in cash for the funeral and another $4,000 Thompson was about to deposit.

"Just in money, it's about $10,000," Thompson said.

Thompson watched the crooks fill all of her stuff in her own pillowcase. They walked out the door, but then came back in and took the entire surveillance camera most likely thinking the footage would disappear with them into the night.

But, it has been shared on social media and is also getting passed on to the police.

"The really sad part is the feeling safe... that we're not going to get back," Thompson said." We're not getting that back."

If you have any information about who the men are in the video you are urged to contact Silent Witness or Phoenix Police.
