PHOENIX — A man has died after a shooting in west Phoenix, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department said.

Police said officers responded to a shooting call shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday near 67th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition but later died, according to authorities.

The victim has since been identified as 19-year-old Xavier Henriquez.

Police say a man named Manuel De La Cruz-Rodriguez told officers "he saw two subjects on bicycles rode up to the victim just before he heard the shooting and he saw them ride away."

However, investigators found evidence that the story was not true and developed probable cause to arrest 71-year-old De La Cruz-Rodriguez.

He has been booked into jail on a second-degree murder charge.
