Police say a 17-year-old man used a rock to threaten a man and attempt to take his car.

The suspect, who is in juvenile custody and not named because he is a minor, told police that on Feb. 20 his friends took him to South Phoenix and left him, according to court documents.

He needed a ride to Mesa, but did not have a car to get there. The suspect picked up a rock and demanded keys to the victim's 2015 Kia Soul.

When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly attacked the man. That man is hospitalized with severe, life-threatening injuries, according to police records.

The suspect attempted to take the car, but ran away when police arrived. He was arrested near 48th Street and Alameda Drive.

The juvenile has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery and attempted car theft.
