Valley Metro has teamed up with The Refrigeration School to create a first-of-its-kind training program to keep the trains cool during the intense summer heat.

Technicians go through a five-week training session so they understand how these industrial-strength air-conditioning units work and how to fix them. The foundation of cooling is still the same as cooling your home, but it's just much more complex. Just one of these cooling units weighs 1,800 pounds and could keep three homes cool at one time.

Valley Metro says that having riders hop on and off creates a unique challenge because all that cold air escapes every time the doors open -- which is why keeping the A/C units in great shape is so important.
