If you're in the dating world right now, you know it’s rough out there. You don't even know if you'll make it to a second or third date.

And then if you're married, you know it can be tough too. We hear it all the time about a lot of marriages not working out. ABC15's Justin Pazera found one Valley couple that managed to get a second date and are still married decades later.

Hal and Ruth Oakes said their "I dos" in September 1947. Hal was 24 years old. Ruth was just 20 -- so young her dad had to legally sign off on the marriage.

Their wedding photos are black and white but the memories are certainly in full color.

"I can remember, 'Hey, you with the bangs! You want to go for a cup of coffee?'" said Hal, remembering yelling out his dorm room window at the University of Colorado.

The quick pick-up line worked. It was an instant connection. But is there really a secret to staying together 70 years?

"You're going to have disagreements," said Hal. "There's no question that that's going to happen but don't let that become the thing that ruins your life." They always say time will tell. In this case, it really is true, their love outlasting the test of time.

"I just have had a fabulous life with him for 70 years," said Ruth. "Every day has been wonderful."
