Phoenix bus drivers could strike at any time beginning Wednesday if a contract agreement is not reached with the company that operates popular city bus routes.

Phoenix pays the company Transdev to operate routes including along Camelback Rd. (Route 50), Central Ave. (Route 0), and 7th St. and Ave. (Routes 7 and 8, respectively).

The bus drivers’ union is in a contract dispute with Transdev, with no resolution in sight.

“Our proposal assures that employees of Phoenix Transdev Services remain the highest paid bus operators in the Valley,” Transdev said in a statement.

Representatives of the drivers’ union, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433, said the dispute is centered on issues including work rules like bathroom breaks, not pay or benefits.

If a strike occurs, Transdev is required within five days to find enough workers to offer Saturday levels of service on all routes.

In the meantime, passengers would be encouraged to find alternate transportation, a city spokesperson said.
