PHOENIX — For some Arizonans the financial fallout from slow unemployment payments is devastating.
Shareka Campbell and her husband James Stevenson, of Phoenix, lost their jobs due to coronavirus closures back in May.
They say they've been waiting for unemployment benefits since May and their circumstances are getting more dire by the day.
"The hardest thing for me is when your kids tell you...they're hungry," she told ABC15. "It struck me to my core because I want to be able to provide for my kids."
The couple has four children ranging in ages one to ten years old. "They're so sweet. They don't ask for much, you know? Just a shelter, you know? Food, and just to be taken care of," Campbell said.
Stevenson, a carpenter, lost his job first. A couple weeks later Campbell lost hers.
And while they say their landlord has been understanding of the situation many of their creditors are not.
They can no longer afford cellphone service, but are still trying to hold on to internet service so they can at least use communication apps that allow them to make phone calls and send text messages.
Campbell says their car insurance lapsed so they hadn't been driving, but just minutes after our interview their lender showed up to repossess their vehicle.
"But it's not just us, you know? I know a lot of people that are waiting for it that have heartbreaking story just like mine, you know? So I just want somebody to hear us and just to help."
