St. Vincent de Paul serving more than a hot meal in Phoenix

St. Vincent de Paul is using its dining room in downtown Phoenix as a temporary shelter to house the homeless. Especially now, the organization says it’s in need of donations and volunteers.

"For some people this is literally life and death,” said Executive Director Steve Zabilski.

After a nearby overflow shelter closed down, St. Vincent de Paul offered up a solution to transform their daytime campus into an overnight facility. They average 225 people a night.

"We set it up every single day and break it down every single morning," shelter manager Kimberly Koenig told ABC15.

The shelter receives funding from Maricopa County, the Arizona Department of Housing and Valley of the Sun United Way to support the shelter. Still, the majority of funding comes from private donations.

Zabilski says St. Vincent de Paul is continuing to work with the county to find a more permanent housing solution.
