What happened to 3-year-old Samuel Brummett Jr.? The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirms they are investigating the young boy's May 2 death, and calling it "suspicious."

According to family members who spoke to ABC15, Samuel was in Department of Child Services custody. His family said the boy was taken from his home just last month, and within days was in Phoenix Children's Hospital on life support.

MCSO released a statement Wednesday, saying, "We are in the initial stages of the investigation right now and are still gathering information...We are working in partnership with DCS and detectives continue to investigate."

MCSO reports they were in the area of where the boy was staying on an unrelated call when they were flagged down. The 3-year-old was reportedly "injured" and airlifted to the hospital, but details on his injuries have not been released. He died at the hospital.

DCS spokesperson Darren DaRonco said due to confidentiality concerns, the agency cannot comment.
