A Yavapai County fire district is asking for donations in hopes of staying in service.

The Daily Courier reports that the Groom Creek Fire District was more than $279,000 in debt as of Wednesday and is now asking the 650 homeowners covered by the district to help them pay it down. Homeowners already pay for fire protection through their property taxes.

Yavapai County Treasurer Ross Jacobs wants an outstanding loan repaid by the end of June as it has been growing for the last five years. He says the district will likely have to shut down in order to recoup costs.

Fire Chief Todd Bentley says the district is making enough money to operate in the black if the debt is paid off.
