When you have a hospital stay, the bills afterwards can be almost as painful as the injury.

Dennis Clark spent months trying to get a refund from Abrazo Scottsdale, formerly Paradise Valley Hospital.

He says he had to pay $3,300 upfront when his wife entered for surgery.

But later, he says he found through insurance papers that he only had to pay $1,489.

So he says he tried calling the hospital and getting back more than $1,800.

He says at times he talked to people who said they'd get back to him and didn't.

Or he says he couldn't get through.

So he let me know.

The Assistance League of Phoenix volunteer team went to work.

Volunteer Carol contacted Abrazo and tried working with them.

She got through the roadblocks in a couple of weeks and Dennis got back his $,800.

In a statement, Abrazo says:

“We are working with our billing partners to determine the cause for the delay and how to prevent similar occurrences in the future. We take patient complaints very seriously and are glad this was resolved directly with the patient.”

In these cases, persistence pays off.

If the hospital isn't responsive, contact their corporate office and don't give up.
