PHOENIX — A South Phoenix man causes a six-hour evacuation by threatening to use an ax and oxygen tanks to blow up his home.

Phoenix police report that on April 12 they responded to a home near 7th Avenue and Dobbins Road for a domestic violence call.

Police say, Jody Wayne Johnson, 45, barricaded himself in the home and threatened to blow up the house by opening oxygen and propane tanks with an ax.

Johnson came out of the home holding an ax and propane tank. He soon retreated into the house.

Police managed to get his wife and daughter out of the home before Johnson re-entered the house.

They also evacuated neighbors from their homes in the immediate area. SAU negotiators convinced Johnson to come out of the house after a six-hour standoff.

Johnson has been charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
