Who would risk jail time for a library DVD? Apparently, one man in the northwest Valley would.

Court records show that a library security guard in Surprise was assaulted and threatened with a knife after confronting a man accused of stealing DVDs from the library.

Surprise police report on March 28, a man, later identified as Robert Sauvageau, walked out of the library near Greenway Road and Bullard Avenue, setting off alarms.

He was confronted by the library security guard, who asked him to return the items he had taken. Instead, after verbally assaulting the guard, he slapped the victim on both sides of his head simultaneously, causing his ears to bleed. He then allegedly pulled a knife on the victim saying, "Do you want to go?"

Police say a witness to the assault called 911, and Sauvageau was found in the parking lot.

Sauvageau reportedly admitted stealing several DVDs from the library after consuming alcohol while fishing, before he entered the library.

Sauvageau has been charged with assault, theft and aggravated assault.
