A Chandler man is accused of murdering an acquaintance just two days after being released from jail.
According to court records, 40-year-old Nick Sublasky made good on his threats to harm the victim who he believed was romantically involved with his girlfriend while he was in jail.
On Aug. 25, Chandler police responded to a home in the area Ray and McQueen roads, where they found 44-year-old Steve Hogarth's body in the backyard. His body had multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Several witnesses in the home told police that Sublasky made threats against Hogarth in the two days between his jail release and the shooting. The witnesses, victim, and Sublasky all knew each other, having hung out together in the past.
Police said that Sublasky returned to the home just after 10 p.m. that night, pointing a handgun at everyone inside. The victim ran out of the home from his bedroom, but Sublasky trapped him in the side yard, shooting him several times, witnesses said.
Police reported that the suspect lived nearby, and they were able to find him and convince him to surrender. Police stated that they noticed some clothing burning in a backyard grill of the home, and a neighbor's surveillance video apparently showed Sublasky throwing an item into the yard in the area where police say they found a handgun.
Sublasky has been charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault.
