TEMPE, AZ — A DPS trooper found 3,000 fentanyl pills during a traffic stop in Tempe earlier this month.
The Department of Public Safety says on April 23 a trooper made a traffic stop on I-10 near Warner Road. The driver, 31-year-old Shane Dawson Stewart, was found to be driving on a suspended license and had a warrant for his arrest out of Willcox.
In a search of his car, a bag containing 3,000 fentanyl pills was located, according to DPS. The estimated value of the tablets is said to be $30,000, court records say.
When questioned about the pills, Stewart allegedly told the trooper, "You know what they are."

DOC records show that Stewart served nine years in prison for aggravated assault in the killing of a teenager in Tucson in 2007.
He has now been charged with transporting illegal narcotics and other drug-related crimes.
