To floss or not to floss? There never was a question -- until this month.
Dental hygienists have been wagging their fingers at us for decades telling us we must floss daily, but a new report called that wisdom into question.
A recent Associated Press report claimed the health benefits of flossing are unproven. According to the AP investigation, the government admitted the effectiveness of flossing had never been thoroughly researched.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was quick to respond to the report, releasing this statement:
Cleaning between teeth with floss and the use of other tools such as interdental brushes is an important oral hygiene practice and, along with professional cleanings and tooth brushing, has been shown to disrupt and remove plaque
The American Dental Association also pointed out "that a lack of strong evidence doesn’t equate to a lack of effectiveness."
Regardless, there's no debate about this: you still need a good dentist.
