While store-bought desserts are often delicious, there’s just something special about homemade treats. From cookies and pie to one of my favorites, Rice Krispie Treats, everything tastes like it contains a little bit of magic when it’s made in your own kitchen.
That’s why Kellogg’s has revamped the recipe for their pre-packaged Rice Krispie Treats by making them more like the ones you would make at home.
The new Rice Krispies Treats Homestyle have more marshmallows and are 50% bigger than the original treats — just like your grandma would make them. Hitting store shelves in January, the new treats will be available in original and chocolate flavors, and will come in individual packages with a writable wrapper, so you can scrawl a handwritten note on the treat and give it to someone you love.
You’ll only need three ingredients to make the original version: butter, marshmallows and Rice Krispies cereal. From there, you’ll melt the butter, add the marshmallows and cereal, and stir until it’s all coated. When you’re done stirring, spread the mixture on a pan, let it cool and cut it into squares. No baking required!
You can also make a Rice Krispie Treat no-bake cheesecake, which calls for everything in regular Rice Krispie Treats, along with cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract and marshmallow fluff for the filling. You can top the cheesecake with Cool Whip and bite-size Rice Krispie Treats for even more snap, crackle and pop!
Fun fact: Rice Krispie Treats have been around for nearly 80 years, as they were invented in 1939 by Kellogg Company employees Malitta Jensen and Mildred Day. The women created the treat to raise funds for Camp Fire Girls, a group formed in 1910 to offer girls outdoor learning experiences.
