The Philadelphia 76ers have brought in longtime NBA executive Jerry Colangelo as chairman of basketball operations.

Sixers officials said Monday that Colangelo, the chairman of USA Basketball, would also serve as an adviser to team ownership.

It's not immediately clear how Colangelo's role will affect Sam Hinkie, the team's general manager and president of basketball operations. Hinkie said in a statement that he feels fortunate to have Colangelo as part of the organization.

Colangelo had a long career with the Phoenix Suns, serving as coach, CEO and general manager, among other roles. He was also on the NBA's board of governors. Colangelo was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 as a contributor, considered one of the most influential owners in NBA history.

The 76ers are in the midst of a significant rebuilding effort, having won only once in 21 games this season.
