Authorities say an explosion at a Surprise home killed a man on Sunday evening.

Surprise firefighters said there were explosions at a house in the 15600 block of N. 136th Lane, near Greenway and Litchfield roads. Police arrived to find a man with serious injuries to his extremities, and he died a short time later.

Police said the victim was in the garage when the explosion happened. Three kids were inside the home at the time, but were not hurt and have since been moved to a different location.

Surprise police said the explosion may have been caused by chemicals in the home. Next-door neighbors were evacuated while authorities investigated to ensure no further hazards.

Surprise Police Lt. Bert Anzini said a Glendale ordinance disposal unit was on the scene to help determine if more evacuations were needed or officials could give the all-clear at the home.

Neighbors were allowed back after the scene was secured.

No other injuries have been reported, police said.
