Work on a West Valley bridge project has resumed nearly a month after a large girder fell, seriously injuring a worker.

Construction at Bell Road and Grand Avenue was halted after the June 9 accident. Investigators have yet to determine an exact reason why the steel-reinforced girder fell after being lifted by cranes.

The rest of the girder work is expected to be completed by July 10. Grand Avenue will be narrowed to one lane in each direction, mostly overnights.

At this point, 29 out of 89 girders have been installed and are found to be structurally sound and made from safe materials.

The worker injured in the June accident is recovering, ADOT says.
