Pursuit from Mesa to Goodyear ends in officer-involved shooting

Police are investigating after a pursuit that ended with an officer-involved shooting in Goodyear overnight.

According to Mesa Police, a suspect, only identified as a 48-year-old man, approached an officer on Main Street and began shooting in the air.

The suspect fled in a vehicle and officers followed him along Van Buren Street through Tempe, Phoenix and into Goodyear.

During the pursuit, the suspect fired shots toward the officers, forcing the officers to return fire.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and is expected to remain under medical care for several days, officials said. 

His name will not be released until he is formally charged, the Mesa Police Department said.

Goodyear Police deployed stop sticks in the West Valley and the suspect exchanged gunfire with those officers as well.

According to Mesa police, the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured.

Several roads were closed in Goodyear while police investigated, but reopened as of Friday afternoon. Check current traffic conditions here.
