Goodyear police say officers shot and wounded a man after he opened fire on them.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Kutis says the man pulled out a gun and shot at police Friday when at least two officers responded to a 911 call about a man lying on a sidewalk and bleeding.

Kutis says the officers returned fire, wounding the man. No officers were injured.

She said the man told officers he had an explosive device in his backpack.

A Glendale Police Department bomb squad detonated the backpack to render it safe.

Glendale police spokesman Sgt. David Vidaure says no explosives were found.

"It was three blurs, boom boom boom, boom boom boom, and that was it," said Damon Frank, the Assistant Manager for an Arriba's Mexican Restaurant nearby.

Frank says police were straight to the point when he came outside to tend to a delivery.

"They told me get inside, get off the street lock the building down, we don't know what's going on," explained Frank.

Frank did as he was told and kept his 15 or so employees, guests and delivery guy inside and away from windows.

“I heard about six or seven gunshots go off and I'm like, 'oh my god this is pretty serious stuff going on here,'" said Frank.

The man's identity wasn't released, and Kutis said she didn't know his condition.
