Fire officials say 140 homes will be without heat after a 2-inch gas main ruptured in Goodyear Monday night.

The leak was reported around 7 p.m. near Litchfield Road and Van Buren Street.

"I went over there to talk to one of the officers, and I wanted to know what was going on, and he told me a gas leak, and you could smell the gas, you could smell it," said Dorothy Hay, who lives nearby.

Firefighters quickly got to the neighborhood and found the air was filled with natural gas.

Crews identified a "hot zone" and evacuated 30 to 40 people, about 10 to 12 condos.

Southwest Gas crews found the ruptured main and were able to cap it in about two hours.

Crews had to purge the lines of residual natural gas before repairs could be made.

There is no word yet when the gas service will be restored.
