It’s a natural reaction.

The doorbell rings. The dog starts barking. You look to see who it is, but when you don’t answer, you don’t expect the visitor to try and break in.

Unfortunately that is exactly what happened to Zach Lucy.

He was working this week from home when a visitor approached his door.

"So I walk over and I take a slight peak,” said Lucy.

His home office looks right out onto the door step. It was a woman peddling all sorts of books.

"I recognized the girl from being here two weeks previously so I didn't want to waste my time talking with her,” said Lucy.

Ring after ring, Lucy started getting nervous. He grabbed his Louisville slugger.

"I had the bat, ready to go, I had it more or less over my shoulder and I had my phone in my other hand,” he said.

Seconds later, Zach heard the window in the office shatter.

The broken glass spooked the woman off, but she left about $200 in damage behind.

“I felt very violated, and not only that, it makes you angry because you want to have faith in people,” he said.

Neighbors say the saleswoman is a smooth talker with a story about college and needing to sell books for a scholarship. They say there has been aggressive solicitors in their area from time to time.

"That's quite scary because I stay home knowing that maybe I don’t answer the door for a certain amount of time and they think no one is home and they are just going to break into my home,” said Stephanie Melot.

Zach isn’t taking any chances. He’s getting an alarm system.

The saleswoman is described as Hispanic, female, about 20, 5 feet 3 inches tall, nicely dressed. She reportedly had a designer purse with her.

A dark-colored four-door sedan was seen moments after the attempted break-in.
