An Avondale woman has been released from prison after serving 17 years for child abuse involving her quadruplets.

Authorities say 42-year-old Elizabeth Shannon Whittle was released Thursday after completing her sentence at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Perryville.

Whittle originally received a 172-year prison term after her 1999 conviction of 13 counts of child abuse.

She was accused of shaking her quadruplet infants violently enough to break bones, detach retinas and cause brain damage.

The babies were placed in foster care and eventually adopted.

Whittle reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in 2005 that reduced her sentence to 17 years.

She will be under state community supervision for about two years.

If Whittle violates the terms of her release, the state clemency board could vote to send her back to prison.
