As thousands of people prepare to have fun watching fireworks on the 4th of July, police are preparing to keep everyone safe.

Tempe police expect roughly 40,000 people in and around Tempe Beach Park to watch fireworks on Tuesday night. Police say they have no credible threats, but they will have heightened security.

"There's going to be uniformed officers that you'll be able to see and recognize and then there'll be some you may not know that they're there," said Tempe Police Detective Lily Duran.

While she won't go into specifics, Duran says police have "new tools" at their disposal this year, and have kept a close eye on incidents around the world. As always, police want you to report anything - or anyone - suspicious.

"Because of everything that's been going on, this is part of why we heighten security, why we've gotten new tools," Duran said.

Perhaps the biggest issue police will face is making sure everyone is staying hydrated. Authorities recommend drinking lots of water well ahead of time, in order to make sure you're properly hydrated.

At the Tempe Town Lake Festival on Tuesday night, among the items you are allowed to bring in is 1 gallon of sealed water.

At the end of the day, everyone should expect to have fun.

"This place is all about having a good time," Duran said.

Gates to the Tempe Town Lake Festival open at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
