The Mesa Police Department says a man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing his pregnant wife Friday night. The victim was three months into the pregnancy but the unborn child did not survive.

At the time of the discovery of the woman, three children below the age of 12 were located inside the house near Center Street and Brown Road. They were not injured and were taken into the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

Police say they were originally called to the scene because 28-year-old Viridiana Gonzalez-Saavedra and her husband, 25-year-old Gustavo Alejandro Ruiz Lamar, were fighting loudly.

Police say when they arrived, Gonzalez-Saavedra was found stabbed inside the home. Police say Ruiz Lamar called them a short time later to turn himself in.

During the investigation, it was determined she was three months pregnant, but the child did not survive.

Ruiz Lamar was booked on two counts of second-degree homicide.
